Dr. Debby Applegate  Debby Applegate visited with students at Amherst in Summer 2010

Dr. Debby Applegate is the winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for her biography of Henry Ward Beecher, The Most Famous Man in America, which was 20 years in the makingShe first discovered Beecher as an undergraduate in the college archives at Amherst College, from where she graduated and continued that work as a Sterling Fellow in American Studies at Yale, where she earned her Ph.D.

Her writing has won her numerous other prizes and has appeared in publications from the Journal of American History  to The New York Times. She has been a Sterling Fellow at Yale University and has taught at both Yale and Wesleyan Universities.

The book spanned the American Revolution to the Gilded Age, and took her to scores of locations around the country, from historical archives to scholarly libraries and damp basements of elderly great-grandchildren.
