The Joy of Self Expression

The visual and performing arts provide an outlet for all that’s being explored and discussed during the Great Books Summer Program. Students can choose from several “electives” to express themselves: music, writing, theater, or visual art.

Working in small groups with highly-talented teachers, students collaborate and contribute to a final evening of performances. It’s the highlight of the Summer Program!

In theater, students begin with voice and movement training before creating their production — a 15-minute Hamlet, a dialogue between Founding Fathers or perhaps Don Quixote set in Manhattan.

For writing enthusiasts, composing collective poems, writing a short comedy skit or contributing to a screenplay are but a few of the possibilities.

Music is an integral part of campus life from informal sessions to the organized music elective. Musicians, aspiring vocalists and composers work together to create an inspiring final performance.

In the arts elective, students may explore different media – photography, sketching, filmmaking and sculpting. The remarkable finished pieces are showcased during the “opening” of our gala evening.
