VIDEO: Preview of Stanford Professor Allyson Hobbs' talk on her book, A CHOSEN EXILE

On Sunday, the Stanford campus of Great Books opens for the summer. One of our amazing guest speakers at Stanford this summer is Stanford history Professor Allyson Hobbs.

Her new book, A CHOSEN EXILE , is coming out this fall from Harvard University Press and focuses on the subject of racial passing--the practice in which light-skinned African Americans chose to present themselves as white. This is a subject that historians have taken up before, but Hobbs' narrates the personal experiences of those who passed, using the wider phenomenon of passing to chart changing perceptions of racial difference in America.
