Zachary Tumin is Special Assistant to the director and faculty chair of Harvard University Kennedy School of Government's Program in Science, Technology and Public Policy. This position is the most recent of a number of key posts he has held at the school that include a Research Fellow with the Program in Criminal Justice Policy and Management; Research Affiliate with the Program on Strategic Computing and Telecommunications in the Public Sector; Executive Director of the Leadership for a Networked World program, and Associate Director for Programs in Technology, Networks and Governance at the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation.
Zach has served widely in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors and has held senior executive positions for industry and government. He began his career as a policy analyst in the City of Boston in the Mayor's Office of Management and Budget, became head of public safety for the New York City public school system, served on the executive staffs of the Brooklyn District Attorney and the New York State Organized Crime Task Force, and was director of the Financial Services Technology Consortium.
Zach leads research initiatives, teaches senior executives in closed door sessions and addresses organizations in keynotes and panels around the world. He is the author of numerous teaching cases, working papers, reports, and essays. He graduated with a B.A. cum laude in Philosphy from the University of Pennsylvania, and holds Master's degrees in Education and in Public Policy from Harvard University.
With co-author William Bratton, former Los Angeles police chief and New York police commissioner, he has written Collaborate or Perish!: Reaching Across Boundaries in a Networked World, published by Crown in January 2012. In it, the authors offer a field-tested playbook for collaboration in a world where everyone is connected and collaboration is the game changer. Drawing upon in-depth accounts from Fortune 100 giants, from masters of collaboration in education, social work and the military; and from Bratton’s own storied career, the book lays out strategies for successful collaboration and has garnered much praise.
