American West - Postponed to 2021
Mayer, AZ

America’s frontier and expansion west serve as the literary backdrop for tales of adventure, fortune, and treachery.
Imagine walking in the steps of rogue cowboys and righteous lawmen. Embark on a dangerous train robbery to fund a risky gold rush venture that could end in a boom or bust. Learn the rich history of the region through Native American storytelling and visits to archeological sites.
Students will explore classic Western stories, like the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Lonesome Dove, by Larry McMurtry. Read True Grit by Charles Portis and discuss excerpts from Western authors that include Zane Grey, Mark Twain, Bret Harte, Willa Cather, and more.
It’s all happening at the new Great Books American West program hosted on the campus of The Orme School in Mayer, AZ for 24 students in grades 9 - 12.
Academics
Campers will explore classic literature and lore inspired by the history and geography of the great American West. Our distinguished faculty will lead daily Shared Inquiry seminars and discussions. Additional readings will include Old West authors such as Louis L'Amour, Annie Proulx, Percival Everett, dime novels author “Jonathan Slick,” and more.

Excursions
On-site activities will include riding horses (as an option), hiking, swimming, and trying to master the art of archery. There will be an offsite day trip to national landmarks that include the majestic Grand Canyon and Montezuma’s Castle. Students will also take an evening to gather around the campfire and take stock of the beauty of an endless night skyline.

Add Additional Weeks for More Literary Adventure
Students can extend their American literary journey by adding weeks from prior programs at Northwestern and Amherst College. Or dare to double up on adventure and add the Tall Ship program too!
