Stanford Center at Peking University (SCPKU) is the result of a long-term partnership between Stanford University and Peking University, two preeminent global institutions. Established in 2012, SCPKU provides a home base in China for Stanford faculty and scholars, facilitating local academic exchange, collaboration, research and outreach activities.
We are thrilled to be in Beijing at the beautiful SCPKU on the campus of Peking University, one of the most prestigious universities in China. We will bring Chinese, American, and international students together for an invigorating and enriching exploration of literature from authors like Virgil, Byron, Confucius, Whitman, Tagore, and more.
Each morning students will gather for a day of exciting seminars and lively discussions led by our distinguished faculty from world-class American universities. Each seminar/discussion focuses on a selection of literature that students have read the previous night. The professors use this time to provoke a thoughtful and close examination of the text. Students also meet in smaller groups throughout the day to hone writing skills. Afternoon discussions introduce additional pieces and allow students to work very closely in small groups with key faculty.
Our method of teaching by asking questions builds the skills necessary to thrive at university. This approach drives students to develop the crucial habits of reflective reading and critical thinking, to recognize their own best thoughts and to develop them with care. Students cultivate the ability to get to the key content, see the big ideas and more readily understand and articulate the subtleties in literature.
