Great Films is the perfect program for students to expand their critical thinking skills. Enrollment is open to students currently in grades 8-12. Join professors and industry professionals to explore cinema as a source of big ideas and discussions about timeless issues. Enrollment is limited, so don't miss your chance to take part!
Watch Hollywood classics, as well as cutting edge new films, and explore the philosophical questions and ideas that are raised through weekly themes and class discussions. Great Films will take the Shared Inquiry method that we utilize in Great Books to hone our critical thinking skills and apply it to the medium of film. Special electives allow students to delve into more creative endeavors like making a short film, writing a screen play or scoring a section of a movie. Our elective leaders are putting the finishing touches on their offerings for this summer so check back for more details about the selections.
Students will enjoy spending a week watching important movies, reading excerpts of screenplays and companion poetry and prose. Great Films allows students to analyze how classic philosophical themes have been treated in film. The themes for this summer are The Limits of Freedom and The Impossible Dream. Each session, Dr. Ilan Stavans explores the theme with students through the close reading of movies and texts. Documentaries, foreign films and animated movies will all be used to give students different perspectives and teach them to view movies in a whole new way.
Great Films is offered for two sessions at Amherst College. Students can take either session independently, both for twice the film immersion or create a combo program by adding a week or two of traditional Great Books before or after!
