Senior Seminar

For Great Books Alumni Only: July 17 - July 30, 2016

Join us @Amherst for one more summer with Great Books!

The in-depth, two-week Senior Seminar program is designed to prepare university bound seniors for their next academic adventure.

Senior seminar students will develop the ability to compare different forms of writing (literature, philosophy, poetry) and media (print, image, film, music). Our goal is not only to challenge the students in their own thinking, but in their ability to discuss their ideas and collaborate with their peers around difficult or thought-provoking ideas.

The best of camp, more intensive academics, and more time with Academic Directors

This exclusive session is a great opportunity to blend the best of camp life with more advanced classes. As in previous summers, students take part in lecture, literature elective, and evening events. In place of arts electives and discussion groups, students attend Senior Seminar Advanced Topics classes.

Highlights of Senior Seminar Advanced Topics classes include breakout sessions – small group discussions at the local coffee shop or Robert Frost Library with professors whose expertise ranges from writing to biology.

Introducing this year's theme: Work and Play

Studying "work" in its current and historical forms helps us understand how society has developed and organized its notions of value, labor, and community. Conversely, attending to notions of "play" from the past two hundred years sheds light on the constantly-shifting balance between choice and necessity, imagination and reality.

In these analytically challenging classes, students will explore, scrutinize, and discuss large philosophical questions and ideas behind rigorous works such as those by Ralph Ellison, Jean-Luc Godard, Upton Sinclair, and other highly-influential texts of history and modern philosophy.
