Enjoy learning with Great Books while living on the campus of Occidental College!
Nestled in the hills of Los Angeles’ Eagle Rock community, the Occidental campus is both peaceful and a place of palpable energy just miles from downtown.
Long considered one of the top colleges in the country, Occidental College fully integrates the liberal arts and sciences with the cultural and intellectual resources of a global city. Occidental is also ranked as one of the most beautiful with 120 acres of century-old oak and eucalyptus trees, graceful arches, and halls built in the Spanish Colonial style.
Founded in 1887—before Los Angeles had its first paved street, saw its first automobile, or made its first movie—Occidental is L.A.’s first and only liberal arts college.
Planned in 1911 by noted California architect Myron Hunt, the Oxy campus reflects a rich history; today, state-of-the-art science facilities are just down the path from beautifully preserved historic buildings. Between the Academic Commons and the Johnson Student Center, the Academic Quad is the heart of campus, where trees provide shade for study, conversation, and contemplation.
Oxy alumni helped create the computer disc drive and streaming audio and video; pioneered the use of the EKG; and developed more effective treatments for multiple sclerosis. They helped overthrow China’s Manchu dynasty, negotiate the SALT treaty with the Soviet Union, invent the system of simultaneous translation used at the U.N., and pioneer a system to protect the Earth from asteroids. Oxy alumni have won Pulitzers, Oscars, Tonys, and Emmys; the National Medal of the Arts, the National Medal of Science, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the O’Hara Poetry Prize; the Navy Cross, the Distinguished Service Cross, and even the Nobel Peace Prize.
