Celebrating 20 Years of Summer On-Campus

Summer 2021 marks Great Books Summer Program’s 20th anniversary. Since our first year, we’ve brought together thousands of students from across the USA and around the globe on the campuses of many of the world’s best universities and colleges.

Here’s a look at the where Great Books Summer Program has spent summers past:

      Amherst College - Amherst, Massachusetts

Amherst College, founded in 1821, is widely regarded as one of the premier liberal arts colleges in the world. Located in Western Massachusetts, Amherst's academic and athletic facilities are among the best of any in the nation. And, of course, Amherst has been home to Great Books Summer Program from the very beginning!

Stanford University - Palo Alto, California

Stanford University’s 8.000-acre campus is one of the most beautiful in the country. Stanford University opened its doors in 1891 and has been one of the most highly-regarded American universities since. The second campus to welcome Great Books Summer Program, we have well over a decade of memories on this campus!

      Northwestern University - Evanston, IL

Northwestern University, founded in 1851, is one of the country’s leading private research and teaching universities. This world-ranked, prestigious school is adjacent to Lake Michigan. The historic culture of nearby Chicago is rich with landmark architecture, visual arts, and strong musical roots in blues, soul, and jazz.

Tales of the Sea: a Tall Ship Adventure - Historic Portland, Maine

Great Books on the high seas! Tales of the Sea marries the study of maritime literature and lore with living and learning to sail on a tall ship.  Students relive the anticipation of Jim Hawkins stowaway onboard the Hispaniola in search of buccaneers and buried gold in Treasure Island.

University of Oxford - Oxford, England

The first abroad Great Books program! Somerville College is one of the constituent colleges of University of Oxford in England. Oxford was the first university in the English-speaking world, established around 1096. Founded in 1897, Somerville is a relatively newer college among the 38 which make up Oxford.

Stanford Center at Peking University - Beijing, China

Stanford Center at Peking University (SCPKU) is the result of a long-term partnership between Stanford University and Peking University, two preeminent global institutions. Established in 2012, SCPKU facilitates local academic exchange, collaboration, research, and outreach activities.
